Ball Mill Liner Selection and Maintenance Guide

Ball mill liners do more than protect the shell — they shape the trajectory of the charge, control grinding action and directly affect throughput and liner consumption. Choosing the wrong liner material or profile wastes energy and shortens the campaign. This guide covers selection and maintenance basics.

Liner Materials

  • Manganese steel — work-hardens under impact, ideal for the feed end and high-impact zones.
  • Chromium-molybdenum alloy steel — higher hardness with good toughness, common for larger mills.
  • High-chrome iron — excellent abrasion resistance for finely ground, less impactive duties.
  • Rubber and composite liners — used in specific fine-grind and corrosive applications.

We supply mill liners sourced from audited foundries, produced to your drawing and OEM dimensions, with material test reports on every batch.

Matching Profile to Duty

  • Lifting profile (wave, step, trapezoidal) sets how aggressively the charge is lifted. Coarse feed needs more lift; fine regrind needs less.
  • Shell vs head liners wear differently — plan replacements so you do not pull the mill twice.
  • Grate and discharge liners control pulp flow; worn grates choke throughput.

Maintenance Practices That Pay Off

  1. Monitor liner wear by regular thickness checks; don’t run to failure.
  2. Track tonnage per millimetre to predict change-out windows.
  3. Match grinding media size and material to the liner to avoid accelerated scuffing.
  4. Document each campaign — what was installed, tonnes processed, failure mode — so the next order is better specified.

Specifying a Replacement

Send the mill type, liner drawing or a sample, the material preference and the quantity. A sourcing partner can confirm dimensions against your OEM liner and arrange inspection before shipment, so the new set installs without a second trip into the mill.
