The GP550 head cone has the largest backing volume in the Metso cone portfolio. You need 130 – 180 liters (34 – 48 gallons) of two-component epoxy backing (Metso KrushMore, ESCOBACK 6000, Copps K-Back). Order a dedicated "GP550 Mantle Backing Kit" (typically 6–7 x 25L pails). Critical: Head cone seat must be pristine (no old backing, oil, moisture). Pre-heat pails to 25–30°C; pour in 3 staged lifts (layers) with 45–60 min intervals to control exotherm peak temp (< 90°C) and prevent thermal shock cracking on the massive head cone seat. The GP550 processes higher tonnage of work-hardened (380–480+ BHN), high-silica/abrasive pebbles/ore at higher power draw (600 kW) than GP500. The extended parallel zone subjects the mantle to extreme sliding compression abrasion under massive normal force. Standard Mn18Cr2 relies on work-hardening (too slow for sliding wear) and suffers rapid micro-gouging/spalling. TiC Composite provides instant 550–620 BHN via dispersed Titanium Carbides, resisting the "sandpaper effect" of pebbles/ore sliding in the parallel zone. Typical life uplift: 3x–4x (e.g., 3–4 weeks Mn18Cr2 → 10–14 weeks TiC). On the circuit constraint crusher, this eliminates 10–15 extra shutdowns/year.

GP500 Bowl: Smaller ID, different profile, shorter parallel zone, different clamp interface. HP/MP Series: Shallower cavity, pivot-point geometry, hydraulic lock bowl seat, different thread/flange. Result: Immediate contact/destruction of locking mechanism, ejection hazard, write-off of head cone ( 220k+) & adjustment ring ( 120k+).
